What is Food Literacy?

Food Literacy is learning and understanding the impact of the food choices on our health, environment, and economy.

The Merced County Food Bank Food Literacy Program is designed to educate individuals and communities about food and its impact on their lives. We strive to equip participants with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to make informed choices about the food they eat, where it comes from, and how it affects their health and well-being.

Programs teach participants about the basic principles of nutrition, including the importance of different food groups, balanced meals, and healthy eating habits.

Participants learn practical skills for preparing nutritious and delicious meals. This may involve learning basic knife skills, cooking techniques, and healthy recipe creation.

Programs teach participants how to shop for healthy food on a budget. This may involve learning how to read food labels, compare prices, and plan meals effectively.

Programs can explore the diverse cultures and traditions surrounding food, as well as the environmental impact of food choices. This can help participants make informed decisions that support sustainable food systems.
